I still remember every word he said — word for word. I still remember the way he looked into my eyes, the way he laughed, the way he explained to me why it wasn’t nice when I did something wrong, the way he held me in his arms and read me stories at night, the way he patted me on my shoulder and encouraged me when I had stage fright.
“You’re fine, Abbey. You’ve been working so hard, now go. Don’t be afraid. Your brother is here.”
“Will you still be here when I’m done?”
“I’ll take you to Kale’s for ice cream.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
I still remember how loud he cheered at the end, how proud he was, how he exclaimed “That’s my sister!” to the old couple next to him when he saw me running from the backstage, to him.
“You did it! It wasn’t so bad, was it?
“I had fun!”
“That’s my girl!”
I still remember how excited I was on our way to Kale’s. I loved Kale’s. And I’ve always loved ice cream. I told him to drive faster but no, he stopped a few blocks away from Kale’s. “Why are you stopping?” He didn’t say anything and instead, told me to stay in the car and ran across the street.
He gave me my first bouquet of roses. Yep, he stopped there so he could buy me flowers. “I was in a rush so I kind of forgot to buy you this. Wish I didn’t though, this is supposed to be given backstage.” I didn’t care, maybe cause I didn’t understand what it was all about. But one thing for sure, he always made me smile.
I remember everything. It’s all crystal clear. Yes, even though it’s been almost two years since that fateful day.
